Join the South Asian Bar Association of San Diego and Judge Owens for a conversation about the law, the legal profession, and diversity on the bench. Chai and Samosas will be served.
Judge Owens was born in 1971. He received his B.A. from U.C. Berkeley in 1993 and his law degree from Stanford Law School in 1996. After law school, Judge Owens clerked for Judge J. Clifford Wallace on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the United States Supreme Court.
From 1998 to 1999, Judge Owens served as a trial attorney for the United States Department of Justice’s Office of Consumer Litigation. From 2000 until 2001, he worked as a litigation associate at the law firm O’Melveny & Myers in Washington, D.C. From 2001 until 2011, he served in the U.S. Attorneys’ Office for the Central District and the Southern District of California. From 2010 until 2011, he served as Chief of the Criminal Division for the Southern District of California. From 2012 until 2014, he was a litigation partner in the Los Angeles office of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP.
On August 1, 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Judge Owens to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The Senate confirmed his nomination on March 31, 2014.
