The Reenactment:
Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego (“PALSD”) is presenting a reenactment of Wards Cove Packing Co. v. Atonio, a landmark employment discrimination case.  In the 1970s, led by Filipino activists, minority workers in Alaskan canneries organized and filed three class action lawsuits to protest the segregated working and living conditions faced by Filipino-American and other minority workers.  After a lengthy trial and multiple proceedings before the Ninth Circuit, the case reached the United States Supreme Court in 1989.

The program will be one hour, in which lawyers and judges will read a prepared script that includes a historical perspective, profiles of the participants, trial testimony, and judicial opinions.

A simultaneously running PowerPoint presentation brings the case to life, showing photographs of the actual working and living conditions as well as the parties, attorneys, and judges.  CLE credit will be available. A reception will follow, so that participants and audience members can further discuss the issues raised by the presentation.
